Northern Israeli City of Nahariya Under Fire as Hezbollah Attacks Intensify

Latest Developments

Tensions on Israel’s northern border continued to escalate on June 10, as Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists launched drones and missiles at cities and towns deeper inside of the Jewish state. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that several explosive-laden drones were fired at the coastal city of Nahariya and its environs — a region rarely targeted by Hezbollah in the past. Two drones were shot down by air defenses over the sea near Nahariya, the IDF Aerial Defense Array said, while two more impacted near Kibbutz Kabri, causing damage and sparking a fire. The IDF also noted that “numerous suspicious aerial targets were identified crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory.” Recent weeks have witnessed a build-up of threats from Hezbollah directed at Nahariya and the communities south of the city.

Expert Analysis

“Hezbollah is increasingly using drones in its attacks on Israel. This appears to be an attempt to test new capabilities and also to test Israel’s responses. Hezbollah’s escalation on June 10 comes two days after a successful Israeli hostage rescue operation in Gaza, illustrating that Hezbollah is seeking to escalate as Israel meets with success in Gaza.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Despite Israeli warnings of broadening the conflict in Lebanon, Hezbollah’s attacks on northern Israel continue to escalate. Hezbollah’s continued aggression indicates that threats are no substitute for concrete military action. Hezbollah’s leadership is not swayed by mere rhetoric and, instead, is driven by its strategic objectives.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

Anti-Tank Missiles Fired at Israeli Kibbutz

Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon deployed anti-tank missiles to target Kibbutz Manara in northern Israel on June 10. “Two anti-tank missiles were fired at Kibbutz Manara in the Galilee on Monday morning. There were no casualties in the incident, and no damage is known. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying that it was carried out in response to the Israeli attacks in Hula and Sheba in southern Lebanon,” Israel’s Ynet News website reported. An anti-tank missile also struck a home in the Israeli border community of Yir’on, causing a fire. The IDF responded with a drone strike on the terrorist cell responsible for the launch. The IDF also confirmed Lebanese media reports that one of its drones had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile over Lebanon.
