Hezbollah Rockets Target Northern Israeli City of Kiryat Shmona

Latest Developments

Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets on May 27 at the northern Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona, causing damage to a building and starting a fire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it attacked Hezbollah’s rocket launchers after the Iran-backed terrorist group fired some 25 rockets at Kiryat Shmona and 30 projectiles at the Meron area in Safed, the Israeli news website Ynet reported. Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted some of the rockets.

Hezbollah continued its attacks on May 28, targeting areas around Kiryat Shmona, setting off warning sirens, and landing a direct hit on a home. Since Hezbollah began attacking Israel in support of Hamas on October 8, it has launched thousands of rockets, missiles, and drones and has damaged hundreds of Israeli homes. Israel evacuated civilians from border areas in October, leaving areas like Kiryat Shmona mostly empty of people amid the attacks.

Expert Analysis

“Hezbollah’s attacks on northern Israel continue to terrorize Israeli civilians and spread destruction in Israeli communities. Hezbollah must be deterred from further attacks, and Israel should be supported in its demand that Hezbollah withdraw its terrorists from the border area.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Hezbollah continues to attack the Jewish state because it has calculated that, despite Israel’s warnings, Jerusalem will not launch a full-scale war in Lebanon. Israel threatened last December to expand the conflict with Hezbollah if the group continued to launch cross-border assaults, but Israel failed to follow through on its threats.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

Terrorists Fire Anti-Tank Missiles at Israel

Terrorists in Lebanon launched three anti-tank missiles toward the Israeli community of Shtula, in the northern Galilee near Lebanon, in the early hours of May 28. No injuries were reported in the attack. The Israel Defense Forces struck a Hezbollah weapons depot in Meiss El Jabal and military structures in the areas of Ayta ash Shab and Khiam in Lebanon overnight between May 27 and May 28. That same night, the IDF intercepted two drone threats near the southern Israeli city of Eilat, apparently launched from Iraq. Iraqi-based Iranian-backed militias have targeted Eilat with drones launched from Eilat numerous times since October 2023.
