Hezbollah Releases New Drone Footage Showing Israeli Military Bases

Latest Developments

The Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah posted footage on July 9 it claimed was filmed by a drone that overflew Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bases and other sensitive sites in northern Israel. “The video began with a map highlighting Mount Dov, the Golan Heights, Nahariya, Safed, Haifa, and Afula. It showed what Hezbollah described as military intelligence bases, strategic electronic intelligence stations, and facilities capable of conducting electronic attacks, which Hezbollah dubs the ‘eyes of the state,” Israel’s Ynet reported. The latest footage was released less than a month after earlier imagery captured by a Hezbollah drone showed coastal areas of Israel. The footage is likely to have been assembled earlier this year, as snow, which is absent from the Golan during the summer months, is visible in some of the images. The footage was released prior to a Hezbollah rocket attack on the Golan on July 9 that killed two Israeli civilians.

Expert Analysis

“The Hezbollah drone footage is the latest attempt by the group to showcase how sophisticated its intelligence-gathering capabilities have become. The footage is designed to threaten Israel by pinpointing Israeli bases and sensitive sites in northern Israel. Hezbollah has targeted many of these sites in the past using kamikaze drones. The precision of Hezbollah’s weapons showcases how far Hezbollah has progressed in recent years in its capabilities.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Though Hezbollah has demonstrated its capability to collect information on sensitive locations in Israel’s north, its success in attacking these sites has been limited. Hezbollah has simply not been able to match Israel’s ability to eliminate the terrorist group’s senior leaders. Still, Israel would prefer not to find out if Hezbollah has a meaningful bite to go with its bark.” — David May, FDD Research Manager and Senior Research Analyst

IDF Strikes Hezbollah Sites in Lebanon

The IDF carried out airstrikes targeting a Hezbollah air defense unit in Janta in the mountains of eastern Lebanon, fifteen miles south of Baalbek. “In addition, the IAF [Israeli Air Force] struck a Hezbollah weapons storage facility in the area of Kfarkela in southern Lebanon,” Ynet reported. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah gave a speech on the evening of July 9 vowing that the terrorist organization would continue its attacks on Israel in support of its Hamas ally in Gaza.
