Hezbollah Rockets Pound Israel Following Killing of Senior Terror Commander

Latest Developments

Hezbollah launched more than 200 rockets as well as several missiles and drones deep into northern Israel on June 12 after the Iran-backed Lebanese terrorist group lost one of its most senior commanders to an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) strike.

The IDF confirmed Lebanese reports that a June 11 Israeli air strike on Jouaiyya killed Sami Taleb Abdullah, chief of Hezbollah’s Nasr Unit, along with three other operatives from the Iran-backed group. According to Lebanese sources, Abdullah — known by his nom de guerre Hajj Abu Taleb —  had commanded the central region of southern Lebanon. He was the most senior Hezbollah figure killed since the group opened a second front with Israel on October 8, one day after Hamas terrorists massacred more than 1,200 people in southern Israel and abducted over 200 more.

The IDF strike that eliminated Abdullah was followed immediately by a cross-border barrage by Hezbollah. Separately, Israel said on June 11 that it destroyed a Hezbollah logistical and munitions center in Baalbek, deep in Lebanon, after Hezbollah shot down a Hermes 900 drone used by the IDF — the fifth Israeli drone Hezbollah has shot down this year.

Expert Analysis

“The escalation trajectory between Israel and Hezbollah is undeniable. No less evident is which side is coming out on top. The Israelis have killed more than 320 Hezbollah figures, some very senior, as well as dozens of members of other Lebanon-based terrorist groups. Hezbollah can claim to have killed only a sliver of that number of IDF personnel, while unleashing its weapons of terror over well-protected civilian communities in northern Israel.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO

“The Hezbollah attacks on Israel on June 12 illustrate how dangerous the Iranian-backed terrorist group has become. It possesses a large arsenal of rockets and has increasingly used drones and anti-tank missiles to carry out precision strikes on Israel. Hezbollah is showing that it is not deterred by striking deeper into Israel with each round of escalation.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

Hezbollah Barrage Follow Days of Escalation

Hezbollah targeted an area near the Israeli city of Haifa on June 10. On June 11, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets targeting Israelis who gathered for the eve of the Jewish religious holiday of Shavuot in Kiryat Shmona. The next day, sirens sounded around the Sea of Galilee and the cities of Nazareth and Tiberias as Iron Dome interceptors were activated in response to Hezbollah’s attacks. Those attacks marked the first time during the current war that Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets at this area. There was no immediate word of any casualties.
