Hezbollah Launches 60 Rockets at Israel

Latest Developments

Hezbollah launched more than 60 rockets at Israel on May 15, causing no casualties. The rockets targeted an Israeli air traffic control base area near Mount Meron in the north, inflicting minor damage, The Times of Israel reported. The barrage came after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) eliminated senior Hezbollah commander Hussein Ibrahim Makki in an airstrike overnight between May 14 and 15. Makki was responsible for the planning and execution of numerous terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and territory since the start of the war, the IDF said.

Hezbollah also claimed on May 15 that it had downed an Israeli “spy” balloon launched from an air base in northern Israel. “A statement from the group said that it hit the balloon’s launching pad, its control mechanism and personnel on the base, which led to injuries among Israeli soldiers and the balloon to fly out of control,” The New Arab reported

Expert Analysis

“Hezbollah’s rocket barrage targeting northern Israel on May 15 illustrates the continued threat that the Iranian-backed terrorist group poses to Israel. Hezbollah has carried out thousands of attacks on Israel since October 2023, when it chose to support the Hamas attack on Israel. Hezbollah must be deterred from further attacks, and its terrorist operatives should be required to withdraw from areas near Israel’s border with Lebanon.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Hezbollah has increased the lethality of attacks against Israel in recent weeks. While these attacks have remained confined to the Lebanon-Israel border, the shift in strategy is unacceptable to Israel. Thus, the killing of Makki, a key Hezbollah figure, serves as a stark warning that military action against the Jewish state will elicit a stern response.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

Hezbollah Leader Meets Hamas Delegation

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah met a Hamas delegation in Beirut on May 15. Khalil al-Hayya, the deputy leader of Hamas in Gaza, led the delegation, which included Hamas politburo members Mohammad Nasr and Osama Hamdan. The talks focused on the war in Gaza as well as student protests on campuses in the West, according to Iranian state media.
