Hezbollah Anti-Tank Missiles Wound Four IDF Soldiers in Northern Israel

Latest Developments

Hezbollah launched two anti-tank missiles on May 13 into the northern Israeli border town of Malkia, wounding four Israeli soldiers. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the attack lightly injured three soldiers and moderately injured another. Medics evacuated the soldiers to Ziv Medical Center in the northern Israeli city of Safed. No fatalities or damage have been reported.

In total, Hezbollah carried out five attacks throughout May 13, Israel’s Memorial Day, beginning in the morning and continuing throughout the day. In one attack, a drone launched from Lebanon struck the Israeli community of Zar’it. In another, two Hezbollah-launched drones targeted an area near Beit Hillel in the Huleh valley. No injuries resulted from either attack.

The Iran-backed terror group has killed 23 Israelis during seven months of conflict. Hezbollah began its attacks on October 8 in solidarity with Hamas following its massacre of Israelis on October 7. Most recently, on May 8, a mortar and missile attack by Hezbollah killed Israeli soldier Staff Sgt. Haim Sabach, also in Malkia. More than 80,000 residents of northern Israel remain displaced from their homes due to Hezbollah’s ongoing threats.

Expert Analysis

“Hezbollah increased its attacks on Israel’s Memorial Day, targeting Israeli communities across the northern Galilee area. The Lebanese terrorist group has been increasing attacks in an attempt to distract Israel from its fight against Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah must be deterred and prevented from further threats and attacks against Israel.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Lethal attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel have increased in the past few weeks. The attacks can be attributed to a growing pressure campaign following the start of the Rafah operation and mounting international calls for Israel to accept a ceasefire deal with Hamas. Despite Hezbollah’s shift in tactics, it has not swayed Israel’s approach in Gaza, and the Jewish state remains firm in its position in ceasefire negotiations.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

Hezbollah Claims It Used New Rocket Against Israel

Hezbollah claimed it used a new rocket in an attack on Israel on May 12. It called the new projectile “Jihad Mughniyeh” after the son of Imad Mughniyeh, a Hezbollah commander killed in 2008 during an airstrike in Syria, which the terrorist group attributed to Israel. The rocket targeted Mount Dov in northern Israel, an area along the border that Hezbollah claims is part of Lebanon. The Iran-backed group has frequently targeted the mountain since it began its attacks on Israel. “While the claim that this is a newly developed rocket has not been independently verified, reports from Lebanon describe it as a heavy rocket that was used for the first time,” Israel’s Ynet reported on May 12.
