IDF Repels Large-Scale Attack by Hamas Cell in Southern Gaza as Reservist Mobilization Looms
Latest Developments
- Close Quarters Gaza Battle: The IDF announced on August 20 that troops from the Kfir Brigade had repelled a rare large-scale coordinated attack by over 15 Hamas terrorists against an IDF encampment in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis. Three soldiers were wounded, one of them seriously, as terrorists affiliated with Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades emerged from a tunnel and opened fire with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns. The IDF killed at least 10 terrorists in the ensuing firefight inside the encampment and with directed airstrikes, while several terrorists fled back into the tunnel.
- 60,000 Reservists Called Up: The IDF reportedly plans to mobilize approximately 60,000 reservists ahead of its scheduled ground offensive to capture Gaza City, which remains a Hamas stronghold. Many of these reservists are expected to replace active-duty soldiers on other fronts, who will then be redeployed to Gaza. An additional 20,000 reservists currently on reserve duty are also set to have their orders extended, amounting to a total of five IDF divisions comprising tens of thousands of troops slated for the upcoming operation. The IDF is already operating in the Zeitoun and Jabalia regions of Gaza in preparation for the offensive, with thousands of Palestinian civilians evacuating to the west and south of Gaza City.
- ‘Gradual’ and ‘Precise’ Operation: An IDF official said that plans for a “gradual, precise” operation in Gaza City had already been approved by senior commanders, with Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir expected to finalize them in the coming days. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the objectives of the operation are to secure the release of all remaining hostages still held captive by Hamas and “complete the defeat” of the Iran-backed terrorist organization. The IDF said that as part of the operation, further aid distribution sites and at least two more field hospitals will be opened in southern Gaza, with further plans “to expand the existing medical infrastructure in the south in cooperation with [international] organizations.”
FDD Expert Response
“This latest Hamas attack reflects a degree of organizational capacity, demonstrating that the terrorist organization continues to have some offensive capabilities. It should not be discounted that Hamas may have been pursuing broader strategic objectives that ultimately went unrealized due to the IDF’s ability to repel the attackers. Nevertheless, the concerning implication is that, so long as Hamas retains some operational freedom, it will continue to strive for a strategic win on the battlefield.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
“Mobilizing thousands of reservists is no small task for a country exhausted from nearly two years of war. However, as the attack in Khan Yunis demonstrated, Hamas still retains the capability to launch rapid, surprise assaults utilizing its tunnel network — a tactic it could once again employ to attack Israeli border communities if left unchecked. With Gaza City serving as one of Hamas’s last bastions of organized strength, Israel deems the operation as essential to preventing the terror group’s resurgence.” — Aaron Goren, Research Analyst and Editor
