Israel Arrests Palestinian Aid Truck Drivers Over Suspected Terror Links
Latest Developments
- Aid Delivery Drivers Arrested: Israeli security forces arrested several Palestinian aid truck drivers suspected of having ties to terrorist groups, according to a report published on August 14 by Israel’s Army Radio. The report underscored that some of the arrested truck drivers belonged to Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, including one whose son participated in Hamas’s October 7, 2023, atrocities in Israel. Drivers have access to cargo zones on the Gaza border and work near IDF troops. On August 5, the UN Office for Project Services reported that 88 percent of aid trucks that had entered the Gaza Strip since May never reached their destinations, having been “intercepted” and looted along their delivery routes.
- Zamir Approves Operational Plan: The IDF said on August 13 that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir “approved the main framework for the IDF’s operational plan in the Gaza Strip.” The plan’s central goal, which Israel’s security cabinet approved on August 8, is the capture of Gaza City. Separately, the IDF’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) reported that nearly 380 aid trucks entered Gaza on August 13 — the highest daily total since Israel reinstated UN aid deliveries following a freeze between March and May aimed at stopping Hamas from stealing and profiting from international aid. During a ceasefire between January and March, the United Nations delivered an average of 500 to 600 aid trucks per day.
- Nukhba Commander Eliminated: The IDF confirmed that it killed Abdullah Saeed Abd al-Baqin during a strike in Gaza on August 7. Baqin served as the deputy commander of Hamas’s Central Jabalia Battalion’s elite Nukhba Force and joined the invasion of Israel on October 7, kidnapping three Israeli soldiers — Ron Sherman, Nik Beizer, and Tamir Nimrodi. The bodies of Sherman and Beizer were recovered from Northern Gaza, while Nimrodi officially remains a hostage but may have died in captivity. Additionally, the IDF said that Baqin was also involved “in advancing numerous attacks against troops operating in Gaza.”
FDD Expert Response
“Allowing aid truck drivers with direct ties to Hamas and other terror factions into sensitive border zones is a recipe for disaster. These individuals aren’t just moving goods — they’re moving intelligence, weapons, and risk right up to the IDF’s front lines. The fact that nearly nine in 10 shipments since May never reached their intended recipients shows the scale of diversion and the urgency for tighter vetting.” — Mark Dubowitz, CEO
“The IDF has a difficult task ahead of it to clear Hamas from Gaza City, as combat operations on urban terrain are one of the most difficult military operations to execute. The IDF must cordon off sections of the city, clear and secure them, then move on to the next area of operation. The IDF may take significant casualties, and the Israeli people must be prepared for this. Once the city is cleared, the next phase of the operation — preventing the return of Hamas — may prove to be even more difficult.” — Bill Roggio, Senior Fellow, Editor of FDD’s Long War Journal
“Baqin was only one of many Nukhba members involved in the atrocities committed on October 7. While the elite force has largely been eliminated, others remain, and they will use the lessons of the war to train recruits if Hamas is allowed to remain active in the Gaza Strip. Thus, the IDF must prioritize the elimination of the remaining Nukhba members to degrade Hamas’s ability to resurrect the force for future attacks.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst, Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
