Beirut Official Claims Lebanese Army Has Dismantled 90 Percent of Hezbollah Infrastructure Near Israeli Border

Latest Developments

  • Lebanese Official Touts LAF Moves Against Hezbollah: An unnamed Lebanese security official has claimed that “over 90 percent” of Hezbollah’s infrastructure along the country’s southern border with Israel had been dismantled by the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). “Hezbollah withdrew and said, ‘do whatever you want,’” the official reported, adding that “there is no longer a military [infrastructure] for Hezbollah south of the Litani [River].” Without producing concrete evidence, he also claimed that most of the remaining Hezbollah munitions discovered by the LAF were either “damaged” by Israeli bombing or “in such bad shape that it is impossible to stock them,” prompting the LAF to destroy them completely.
  • IDF Eliminates Hezbollah Operatives in Southern Lebanon: The IDF struck and killed two Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon in separate incidents on May 1. According to an IDF statement, one of the individuals was a member of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan forces, while the other was engaged in intelligence-gathering activities along the Israel-Lebanon border.
  • Lebanon Warns Hamas Not to Compromise Sovereignty: Lebanon also issued a warning to Hamas, urging the Iran-backed terrorist organization not to carry out any actions that could undermine the country’s sovereignty. “The President underscored Lebanon’s refusal to be drawn into regional conflicts, highlighting the importance of Palestinian rights without compromising Lebanese stability,” said Mohammad al-Mustafa, head of Beirut’s Supreme Defense Council. Mustafa said that the council would recommend that Lebanon’s cabinet issue a “warning” to Hamas “against using Lebanese territory to carry out any actions that threaten Lebanese national security.”

FDD Expert Response

“This Lebanese official’s claims are baseless. The IDF continues to strike Hezbollah operatives and facilities south of the Litani. Even Hezbollah admits that the only weapons lost are those destroyed in Israeli airstrikes. There’s zero public evidence that the Lebanese Army has dismantled any significant Hezbollah infrastructure.” Ahmad Sharawi, Research Analyst

“The Lebanese government’s reported warning to Hamas is a positive development. However, statements alone are insufficient. The critical question remains: Will the Lebanese government act if Hamas disregards its warning not to launch military operations from its territory? That remains uncertain. Hamas operates in southern Lebanon under the protection and direction of Hezbollah, not the Lebanese state. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Hamas will heed Hezbollah’s guidance rather than that of the Lebanese authorities.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
