American October 7 Victims File U.S. Lawsuit Against Iran, Syria and North Korea

Latest Developments

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a U.S.-based Jewish civil rights organization, submitted a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC, on July 1 targeting the regimes in Iran, Syria, and North Korea for enabling Hamas’s terrorist atrocities in Israel on October 7. Jointly filed with international law firm Crowell & Mooring, the suit was lodged on behalf of 130 U.S. citizens who were killed or injured on October 7 and family members of U.S. victims. The 117-page civil action asserts that the defendants “provided material support to Hamas that enabled it to commit atrocities in Israel on October 7, 2023,” the ADL said in a press release. That support includes funding and training from Iran and Syria as well as weapons from Iran and North Korea. Pyongyang also “provided specific assistance” to Hamas with regard to “the design and construction of underground tunnel networks used in attacks in Israel,” according to the court filing.

The victims are seeking at least $4 billion in damages for “a coordination of extrajudicial killings, hostage takings, and related horrors for which the defendants provided material support and resources.” “While nothing will ever undo the unbearable pain Hamas caused our family or the brutal losses we’ve suffered, we hope this case will bring some sense of justice,” Nahar Neta, whose mother Adrienne was among the 130 people murdered by the terrorists at Kibbutz Be’eri, stated in the ADL press release. “It’s important for us to be able to tell our stories so the world can hear how Hamas has terrorized Israel, the Jewish people, and many American citizens.”

Expert Analysis

“Syria plays an integral role in the Iranian-controlled financial networks that transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. This should not be news to anyone familiar with the Assad regime. Six years ago, the Treasury Department described in detail how Syria receives oil shipments from Iran that facilitate the onward transfer of funds to Hamas and Hezbollah, with help from the Central Bank in Damascus. Harboring Palestinian terrorists is something Syria has done for more than half a century.” — David Adesnik, FDD Senior Fellow and Director of Research

“The trio of Iran, Syria, and North Korea perfectly illustrate the intimate connection between the repression and torture of their own citizens and their sponsorship of terror against Israel, the United States, and other democracies. This lawsuit is an important opportunity to shine a light upon the allies of Hamas and Hezbollah by reminding Americans of the nefarious goals these rogue states have embraced.” — Ben Cohen, FDD Senior Analyst and Rapid Response Manager

October 7 Victims Sue UNRWA

In June, more than 100 Israeli victims of the October 7 Hamas atrocities, along with family members, filed a lawsuit in New York demanding over $1 billion in damages from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The 167-page lawsuit, filed with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, is directed “against seven current and former top United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) officials who are accused of knowing that Hamas siphoned off more than $1 billion from the agency to pay for, among other things, tunneling equipment and weapons that aided its attack on Israel on October 7,” The New York Times reported. The seven defendants include UNRWA’s current commissioner-general, Philippe Lazzarini, as well as its former commissioner-general, Pierre Krähenbühl, who is now the director-general of the International Committee of the Red Cross; Filippo Grandi, the UN high commissioner for refugees; and Gréta Gunnarsdóttir, director of UNRWA’s New York office.
