Israel Asks Residents to Evacuate Gaza’s Shujaiya Neighborhood Amid Renewed Fighting

Latest Developments

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a new offensive in northern Gaza’s Shujaiya neighborhood on June 27, Israeli media reported. “According to Palestinian sources, the forces entered the densely populated neighborhood in the northern part of the strip from several directions,” Israel’s Ynet stated. The Jerusalem Post described the raid as a “surprise attack.” In a post on social media, the IDF’s Arabic language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, called on residents of the area to evacuate south on Salah al-Din Road, a major north-south transportation artery that links Gaza City with southern Gaza. A Gazan told local media that the IDF’s advance was “sudden, amid intense gunfire.” The IDF has carried out similar raids in other areas of northern Gaza over the last months targeting terrorist cells who have returned to the territory.

Expert Analysis

“Hamas continues to operate throughout northern and central Gaza in areas that are not held by the IDF. The presence of Hamas cells requires the IDF to continue to carry out raids and dismantle the terrorist group by destroying its terrorist infrastructure and targeting its fighters and leaders.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“It has been over four months since Hamas publicly acknowledged its presence in Shujaiya. However, there have been ongoing attacks in the central and northern Gaza Strip that may have originated from this location. Notably, Shujaiya has a history of being a stronghold for terrorist groups, and it should not be surprising that some cells remain in the area.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

IDF’s Raid in Shujaiya Is Part of Multi-Month Anti-Terror Campaign

The renewed fighting in Shujaiya comes six and a half months after the IDF first cleared the dense urban neighborhood during the first phase of Israel’s ground operations in Gaza. The most recent clashes in Shujaiya were in April. The IDF has learned that Hamas often returns to areas in Gaza even after Israeli troops clear them of terrorists.

In the neighboring area of Jabaliya, the IDF launched a three-week operation in May that recovered the bodies of seven hostages. The IDF also launched a raid on Shifa Hospital in March that netted hundreds of terrorist detainees. In each case, the IDF used a similar tactic of clearing the area, leaving, and then returning to detain terrorists who returned.
