Israel Hit with 325 Hezbollah Attacks in May, Including With Burkan Missiles: Israel suffered 325 Hezbollah attacks in May, according to the Alma Research and Education Center, the largest number in a month since last October.  On Sunday afternoon, Alma wrote that in the previous 72 hours, Hezbollah had claimed responsibility for 25 attacks with suicide drones, anti-tank missiles, an antiaircraft missile, and high-trajectory fire, including Grad rockets and Burkan missiles. The Burkan missiles, which have a range of up to a little over six miles and a very heavy warhead — between 220 and 1,102 pounds of explosives — caused damage to an IDF base in the area of Kiryat Shmona. Iran helped Hezbollah develop the Burkan to aid Bashar Al-Assad’s forces in the Syrian civil war, but the missile has since been used against Israel. According to an IDF source quoted by Israeli news outlet Ynet, “So far, dozens of Burkan rockets have been used, mainly targeting communities and border outposts. They cause significant damage to homes, can hit outposts and destroy them, and with direct hits, they can penetrate IDF structures.” After Hezbollah said it fired a Burkan missile at Kiryat Shmona, the IDF stated that it destroyed the launcher and killed two Hezbollah operatives.

Defense Minister Gallant: We Will Not Accept Hamas as Ruling Power in Gaza After War: On Sunday, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, in a meeting with the IDF’s Southern Command, stated that “at no stage will we accept Hamas as the ruling power in Gaza after the war. We are working on the ground and in other ways to dismantle its military capabilities, and this is how we will achieve our objectives and bring back our hostages.” According to Gallant, “The operation in Rafah is progressing both above and below ground. The forces are … destroying the lifeline connecting the Gaza Strip to Egypt. We are steadily choking Hamas…” Gallant added that Israel will “remove the Hamas members and bring in other forces that will enable a different government.” The defense minister stated that the combination of military action and the ability to change the government will enable Israel to achieve its objectives of dismantling Hamas and returning the hostages.

IDF Holds Exercise to Prepare for War in the North and Multifront War: The IDF on Sunday reported that last week, the army carried out an exercise to improve its readiness for war in the north. Regular army soldiers and reservists participated in the exercise, which was carried out by the Northern Command and other directorates and wings. They practiced for an expansion of the war to the north as well as a multifront war. As part of the exercise, the 36th Division practiced fighting in the north. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi visited the Northern Command’s underground command center, the Israeli Air Force command center, and war rooms during the exercise, along with other officers, including Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, head of Northern Command; Israeli Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar; Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, head of the Intelligence Directorate; and Maj. Gen. Oded Basyuk, head of the Operations Directorate.

IDF Finds Weapons and Terror Infrastructures in Rafah Area, Eliminates Snipers in Central Gaza: The IDF on Monday reported on operations in the Rafah area in southern Gaza, noting that troops from the 162nd Division are continuing fighting there and have found a large number of weapons and terrorist infrastructures in the past day. In a raid on a military building, troops from the Maglan commando unit found rocket-propelled grenades. In central Gaza, soldiers from the 99th Division are continuing fighting and in the past day, after several terrorists in a sniper position were spotted by troops from the division’s 679th Yiftah Armored Brigade, an Israel Air Force drone eliminated the men. Soldiers from the division, working with the IAF, also eliminated a Hamas operative spotted in the area who was preparing to use mortar fire.
