Rockets From Lebanon Set Off Sirens Near Haifa

Latest Developments

Rockets fired from Lebanon set off sirens near the port city of Haifa on November 6, marking a further escalation from Lebanon-based terrorist groups. The sirens in Kiryat Yam and Kiryat Bialik, some five miles from central Haifa, marked the furthest-ranging launches by terrorists in Lebanon in their fighting with Israel in parallel to the Gaza war.

Israeli authorities said some 30 rockets were fired altogether, including a number aimed at more northern towns. Hamas claimed responsibility for 16 of them; Hezbollah may have fired the others. There were no reports of casualties or damage. Later in the day, the Israel Defense Forces struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

Expert Analysis

“These threats to the Haifa bay area are threatening enough, given its importance to Israeli industry and shipping. Should they continue and wreak destruction or reach into Haifa itself, it is hard to see how the Israelis will be able to continue to exercise restraint on the northern front.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO

“Just as smaller armed groups buttress the firepower of Hamas in Gaza, the Lebanese branches of Hamas and Islamic Jihad are supporting the Iran-backed Hezbollah by launching attacks against Israeli targets.” — Joe Truzman, Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal
