FDD Releases The Afghanistan-Pakistan Theater: Militant Islam, Security and Stability

Washington, D.C. (June 7, 2010) – The Foundation for Defense of Democracies released today The Afghanistan-Pakistan Theater: Militant Islam, Security and Stability, which explores the volatile situation the United States confronts in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Edited by FDD senior fellow Daveed Gartenstein-Ross and President Clifford D. May, the book features contributions from the following experts:

  • Hassan Abbas, Quaid-i-Azam Professor associated with the South Asia Institute, Columbia University and a senior advisor at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
  • Dr. C. Christine Fair, an assistant professor at the Center for Peace and Security Studies (CPASS) within Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.
  • Dr. Vanda Felbab-Brown, a fellow in foreign policy and in the 21st Century Defense Initiative at the Brookings Institution.
  • Vanessa M. Gezari, a journalist who covers national and international affairs with a focus on Afghanistan, South Asia, and the impact of conflict on its survivors.
  • Dr. Sebastian Gorka, a military affairs fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
  • Shuja Nawaz, the director of the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council of the United States.
  • Joshua T. White, a research fellow at the Institute for Global Engagement's Center on Faith & International Affairs.
  • Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, director of the Center for the Study of Terrorist Radicalization at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan Theater includes diverse analyses and perspectives, written with the understanding that the way forward will not be easy, but that the need for clear thinking and informed decisions is critical. The contributors cover the factors that have helped al-Qaeda gain a foothold in the region, the challenges to counterinsurgency efforts, and options for U.S. strategy now and in the future.

The book is the product of FDD's 2009 Leading Thinkers policy workshop, which brought together a distinguished group of specialists with significant regional expertise, including prominent scholars, military strategists, former intelligence operatives, members of the media, and the ambassadors of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Afghanistan-Pakistan Theater is published by FDD Press and is available online.
