Biography

Daniel Kliman is senior advisor for Asia Integration at the U.S. Department of Defense. His portfolio encompasses long-term policy and strategy, work with U.S. allies, and defense innovation. While at DoD, Dan is on leave from the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), where as a member of the Asia Program, he established a new line of research on the future of international order, launched a leadership development initiative focused on understanding great power competition in Asia, and expanded GMF’s programming on Japan. Dan is the author of two books, most recently, Fateful Transitions: How Democracies Manage Rising Powers, from the Eve of World War I to China’s Ascendance. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Stanford University and a PhD in Politics from Princeton University. Dan also serves as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. (This bio is current to when the participant joined FDD’s National Security Network.)
