Hezbollah Attacks Cause Large Fires in Northern Israel; Chief of Staff: Decision Point Approaching: On Sunday and Monday, Hezbollah rocket and explosive drone attacks started numerous fires in the north of Israel, which firefighters worked for hours to extinguish. According to the Alma Research and Education Center, Hezbollah took “advantage of the dry weather in Israel and began targeting forested areas to ignite forest fires,” shooting at “the forested areas” of Hanita, Netua, and Baram. Kiryat Shmona, largely evacuated early in the war due to Hezbollah attacks, was attempting to evacuate the remaining residents because of the fires. According to the Jewish National Fund, which deals with afforestation in Israel, the Hezbollah attacks have led to the burning of tens of thousands of dunams of natural forest. On Tuesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, in a tour of the northern border with Fire Commissioner Eyal Caspi and military commanders, stated that “we are approaching the point where we will need to make a decision,” adding that “the IDF is prepared and very ready for this decision.”

IDF Begins Operations in Bureij and Deir al-Balah Areas in Gaza: In the past day, the IDF’s 98th Division began a “precise operation” in the east of Bureij — where the army also fought in January — and the east of Deir al-Balah. The IDF says the operation was undertaken on the basis of intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists and terrorist infrastructures in the area both above and below ground. The operation began with Israeli Air Force strikes on terrorist targets including weapons depots, “underground infrastructures,” and military compounds, and several terrorists were killed in the strikes. Simultaneously, the 7th Armored Brigade’s combat team began a targeted strike in Bureij and the Kfir Brigade’s combat team started an attack in the east of Deir al-Balah. The IDF says that the Kfir Brigade, along with armored and engineering troops from the 7th Armored Brigade and the Givati Brigade, are working together to destroy terrorist infrastructure located a few miles from Israel’s border.

IDF Establishes New Counterterror Unit for Gaza Envelope: The IDF on Monday established a new unit, Lotar Otef (Gaza envelope counterterrorism unit) as part of the 143rd (Gaza) Division. The decision to establish the unit was made in response to the lessons learned from the October 7 attacks and in accordance with instructions from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi. The unit, which is intended to provide a fast response to terrorist attacks in the Gaza envelope, will be made up of reserve soldiers who served in elite units and live in communities in the Gaza envelope or in the area. Members of the unit will receive training to enable them to cope with “the challenges of the area.” Hundreds of soldiers have already requested to join the unit.

COGAT: Record Number of Food Aid Trucks Enter Gaza in May, Indonesian Hospital Open: COGAT, the Israeli entity coordinating humanitarian aid for Gaza, says that in May, a “record number” of trucks with food aid entered Gaza. On Monday, June 3, 259 aid trucks entered Gaza, 222 of them through the Kerem Shalom crossing and 37 through the Erez crossing, while yesterday, the total was 263. According to COGAT, the contents of more than 1,000 aid trucks are awaiting pickup by UN agencies on the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing. COGAT also announced yesterday that the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza is now operational, adding that the emergency department and reception have been renovated and resumed operations.
