Battalion Commander Among 4 Hamas Terrorists Eliminated by IDF in Rafah
Latest Developments
- Key Terrorists Killed in Southern Gaza: The IDF confirmed on December 4 that Hamas’s East Rafah Battalion commander, Mohammad Bawab, was killed alongside his deputy, Ismail Abu Labda, and two other terrorists, Tawfiq Salem and Abdullah Hammad, in strikes on November 30. The four operatives were detected emerging from tunnels in the eastern half of the Gaza city of Rafah — where Israel says dozens of Hamas members are trapped underground — and subsequently eliminated in airstrikes. Bawab and Abu Labda assisted in planning the battalion’s participation in Hamas’s October 7, 2023, atrocities, while Hamad was the son of senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad, who survived an Israeli strike in Doha, Qatar, on September 9.
- Anti-Hamas Militia Commander Killed: Yasser Abu Shabab, the commander of the Popular Forces, an anti-Hamas militia in Gaza, was reportedly killed in what was labeled an “internal clash” in southern Gaza, according to Israel. Following the incident, Abu Shabab was taken to a hospital in Israel, where he died of his injuries. Israel previously strengthened the Popular Forces to fight Hamas in Gaza, providing weapons to the group throughout the war.
- 1 Hostage Remaining in Gaza: Remains handed over to Israel by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza were positively identified as Thai national Sudthisak Rinthalak on December 4, leaving the remains of only one slain hostage in Hamas captivity. Sudthisak was an agricultural worker at Kibbutz Be’eri who was murdered by Palestinian terrorists on October 7, 2023, with his body subsequently taken to Gaza by Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists. Israeli Ran Gvili is the last hostage whose remains have yet to be returned to Israel.
FDD Expert Response
“While the killing of senior figures in Hamas’s Rafah Brigade may not dramatically degrade the group’s military capabilities, it further erodes the reservoir of battlefield experience the terrorist organization possessed before October 7. While Hamas can replace personnel, it cannot easily regenerate the depth of leadership and operational knowledge lost with the deaths of dozens of commanders over the course of the war.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
“The death of Abu Shabab is an indication that the anti-Hamas militias in the Gaza Strip cannot meaningfully undermine Hamas on their own. Tribal loyalties and internal divisions outweigh their hostility toward Hamas. Add to that their small size and limited support base, and it becomes clear why these groups struggle to pose any real challenge to Hamas.” — Ahmad Sharawi, Research Analyst
