Druze-American Executed in Syria Amidst Sectarian Violence

American Citizen Murdered: The State Department confirmed on July 22 that a Druze Syrian-American citizen was executed in Syria alongside seven of his family members, amidst sectarian clashes involving Druze and Bedouin factions along with Syrian government forces. Hosam Saraya, 35, was identified by relatives after video emerged of masked men in military uniforms shooting eight Druze captives on July 17 while shouting “God is great.” Though one friend of the Saraya family stated that he believed the gunmen were aligned with the Syrian government, their identities could not be confirmed.
Israel Reopens Triage Facility in Syria: The IDF said on July 23 that it was reopening a medical facility near the Syrian Druze village of Hader after it was closed prior to Israel’s 12-Day War with Iran. The mobile triage center was set up in May to treat wounded Syrians as the IDF carried out operations in southern Syria.
U.S. to Broker Thursday Talks Between Israel and Syria: The United States will reportedly broker talks between Israeli and Syrian officials on July 24, in a bid to further security coordination and communication to prevent future outbreaks of violence in southern Syria. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack will lead the meeting, though the location of the discussions remains undisclosed. Previous meetings between Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi and Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Sheibani reportedly took place in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.
