1 Killed in Shooting and Stabbing Terror Attack at Gush Etzion Junction
Latest Developments
- Terror Attack in West Bank: An Israeli man in his 20s was killed in a terrorist attack at the Gush Etzion junction in the West Bank on July 10. The combined stabbing and shooting attack was carried out by two terrorists who arrived at a shopping center in a stolen vehicle, before stabbing and murdering a security guard and using the guard’s weapon to continue shooting at civilians in the area. Both assailants were eliminated by security forces responding to the attack.
- IDF Blocks Roads Surrounding Attack Site: Following the attack, the IDF set up roadblocks at the entrances of the nearby cities of Hebron and Bethlehem and surrounded the Palestinian town of Halhul in search of further terror suspects. While not taking credit for the attack, Hamas called the attacks “heroic” and called for further escalation of attacks on Israeli security forces and civilians in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
- Recent West Bank Activities: An IDF soldier was stabbed by a Palestinian terrorist during a July 10 military operation in the West Bank village of Rumana, near Jenin. The attacker was killed, and the soldier was evacuated for treatment. Since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, atrocities against Israel, the IDF has arrested some 6,000 Palestinians across the West Bank, including over 2,350 individuals affiliated with Hamas.
FDD Expert Response
“Terrorist attacks that are not seemingly connected to an organized terrorist group are nonetheless leveraged by Hamas and its allies to rationalize acts of violence against Israelis. This is part of a broader strategy by Hamas to normalize terrorism against Israelis as a legitimate form of so-called resistance. Alarmingly, this narrative has gained some traction in Western societies, where acts of terrorism have been carried out under the pretense of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
“Today’s attack underscores the challenge of detecting and preventing lone wolf-style terrorism. Additionally, while the IDF has made significant progress against Iran-backed terrorist groups in the northern West Bank since the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities, these same groups and terror cells may now recognize an opportunity to reconsolidate their forces and launch attacks from the central and southern regions of the West Bank.” — Aaron Goren, Research Analyst and Editor
