5 IDF Soldiers Killed, 14 Wounded, During Operation Against Hamas in Northern Gaza
Latest Developments
- Slain in Roadside Bomb Explosion: Five Israeli soldiers were killed and 14 more wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza. The soldiers included Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20, Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, Staff Sgt. Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, and reserve Sgt. 1st Class Benyamin Asulin, 28. According to an IDF probe, the soldiers, four of whom were part of the religiously observant Netzah Yehuda Battalion were struck by three bombs remotely detonated in succession by Hamas terrorists during ground operations.
- Formerly Incarcerated Terrorists Killed: Hamas claimed on July 8 that Israel killed six Palestinians who had been released from Israeli prisons and deported to Gaza as part of a previous prisoner release for Israeli hostages. Five of the six had been released in a deal to free IDF hostage Gilad Shalit in 2011 — the same deal in which former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was freed. Hamas leader Abdel Hakim Hanini slammed the two strikes leading to their deaths as “nothing but evidence of the deep-seated Zionist hatred.”
- October 7 Massacre Leader Killed: The Israeli military also confirmed that it had eliminated Hamas commander Taha Abu Ayada on July 1. Ayada commanded a unit of Hamas’s elite Nukhba Force in the Khan Younis area. During Hamas’s October 7, 2023, massacre, Ayada led a raid on a gas station in Kibbutz Magen. Back in Gaza, he “promoted and led” numerous terrorist operations in the Khan Younis area, including several in recent weeks.
FDD Expert Response
“Hamas commander Hussein Fayyad is likely responsible for the ambush that killed five soldiers and wounded fourteen others in Beit Hanoun. Although Israel initially believed it had eliminated Fayyad earlier in the war, he remains operational. Given his continued activity, Israeli intelligence will almost certainly intensify its efforts to locate him before any ceasefire agreement is implemented. Fayyad has the potential to emerge as one of Hamas’s central leaders in Gaza, which is an outcome Israel will be determined to prevent.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
“This is a serious incident that took place close to the Israeli border in a Gazan town that the IDF cleared in previous operations. It is evidence that terrorists in Gaza seek to infiltrate back into areas where the IDF is operating and that terrorist cells are prepared to reappear if the IDF withdraws from areas near the border. Israel will need to be cautious in any ceasefire deal to make sure the threats do not reemerge.” — Seth J. Frantzman, Adjunct Fellow
