Hamas Chief Yahya Sinwar Eliminated in IDF Operation
Latest Developments
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet intelligence agency confirmed the elimination of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip on October 17. Sinwar — a key architect of the atrocities carried out by Hamas terrorists in Israel on October 7, 2023 — was killed by troops serving with the IDF’s 828th Brigade operating in the area.
In a joint statement, the IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that Sinwar “was eliminated after hiding for the past year behind the civilian population of Gaza, both above and below ground in Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip.” It noted that the “dozens of operations carried out by the IDF and the [Shin Bet] over the last year, and in recent weeks in the area where he was eliminated, restricted Yahya Sinwar’s operational movement as he was pursued by the forces and led to his elimination.”
The IDF and Shin Bet initially released a joint statement announcing that three terrorists were killed but did not confirm Sinwar’s elimination. A subsequent investigation using DNA and dental records from the time he spent in Israeli prisons positively identified Sinwar as one of the dead.
Hamas’s political leader in Gaza since 2017, Sinwar assumed overall authority of Hamas when he succeeded Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran on July 31. Sinwar rose through the Hamas ranks as a fierce advocate of violence against Israel, helping establish the terrorist organization’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and its Majd internal security department. In October 2011, Sinwar was serving multiple life terms for the killing of two Israeli soldiers when Israel released him as part of a deal to free the kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, whom Hamas had held for five years. In 2015, the United States added Sinwar to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said in October that Sinwar “decided on” the October 7 assault, and an Israeli military spokesman called him a “dead man walking.” Sinwar went silent in mid-September, fueling speculation that he may have been killed. However, he resurfaced in early October and, according to some media accounts, reestablished contact with Qatari mediators.
Expert Analysis
“The elimination of Sinwar has leveled a body blow to Hamas. The IDF has delivered a measure of justice to the 1,200 victims of the October 7 atrocities but Israelis remain rightly agonized over the fate of the remaining hostages in Gaza. Sinwar’s removal from the scene is another milestone in an Israeli response that has also seen the elimination of his fellow terrorist Ismail Haniyeh, Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah, and others. Iran’s terror regime — who bear ultimate responsibility for this war — is on notice.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO
“The elimination of Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces marks a significant achievement. This pivotal moment presents the Jewish State with an opportunity to negotiate the release of hostages and, under favorable conditions, to end the Gaza war. Furthermore, the Iran-led Axis of Resistance has endured considerable setbacks in the last months, and now is the time to press for its full retreat. The Biden administration must recognize this moment as a chance to throw its full weight behind Israel’s battle against Iran and its proxies.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
