IDF Recovers Remains of Six Hostages in Khan Younis Operation
Latest Developments
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recovered the bodies of six hostages seized by Hamas terrorists during the October 7 atrocities in an overnight operation in Khan Younis on August 19. Five of the hostages — Alex Dancyg, 75, Yagev Buchshtav, 35, Chaim Peri, 79, Yoram Metzger, 80, and Nadav Popplewell, 51 — were already assumed dead, while the sixth — Avraham Munder, 78 — was thought to have still been alive. The six had been taken captive from Kibbutz Nir Oz and Kibbutz Nirim, which lie close to Israel’s border with Gaza.
The operation reduced the number of hostages who remain in Gaza to 109, out of more than 250 abducted on October 7 and four seized prior. Around one third of them have been declared dead in absentia by the Israeli authorities. Israel has demanded that any Gaza truce entail the release of the maximum number of living hostages in the first phase.
Expert Analysis
“This operation has again displayed Israel’s humanity and heroism, and will offer the families a measure of closure. But they will also impact on Secretary Blinken’s current trouble-shooting tour. Some Israelis will push for tougher IDF action, rather than a truce, in order to recover more hostages by force. Others might appeal for a deal in the hope that surviving hostages can be brought home alive. It’s another reminder of the brutality and inhumanity of Israel’s enemies.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO
“It is improbable that the discovery of the six hostages was merely a coincidence. It was the result of intelligence gathered by Israeli ground forces, along with various other data collection methods. This approach has proven effective for Israel in the war. However, the process is painfully slow, and Israel is working on limited time. Hamas’s new leader, Yahya Sinwar, is hedging that despite Israel’s recovery of some of the hostages, the captives’ families and pressure from the Jewish state’s allies will compel Prime Minister Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire deal on Hamas’s terms.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal
Hostage Remains Rescued from Underground Tunnel
According to the IDF, accurate intelligence enabled IDF special forces working in tandem with the Shin Bet security agency to recover the bodies from a specified underground tunnel in Khan Younis, as fighting intensified elsewhere in the city. An IDF statement accompanied by photos of the operation said that “the forces located a tunnel shaft about 10 meters deep leading to an underground tunnel route where the bodies of the hostages were found.” The soldiers had “investigated the route and neutralized the obstructions, blast doors, weapons, explosives and hideouts used by the terrorists.” The statement also noted that the “rescue was carried out after prolonged combat in a built-up area and in multi-story buildings, in which the forces carried out operations and searches that led to the elimination of terrorists and the destruction of terrorist infrastructure.”
