Israel Announces Deaths of Two Hostages in Hamas Captivity
Latest Developments
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) determined on July 22 that two hostages seized by Hamas during the October 7 massacre had died, with their remains still held in Gaza. Alex Dancyg, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Yagev Buchshtab, a resident of Kibbutz Nirim, died several months ago during Israeli military operations in Khan Yunis, the IDF said. The decision to determine their deaths was based on intelligence and the approval of an expert committee of the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Services and the Israeli police. The authorities are examining the circumstances of their death in Hamas captivity, the IDF noted.
The IDF has confirmed the deaths of 44 of the 116 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza. Hamas and its allies kidnapped 251 people during the October 7 atrocities. Hamas also holds the bodies of IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, who were abducted during the 2014 war, and holds captive two Israeli civilians, Avira Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who entered Gaza in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
Expert Analysis
“The chances of Israeli civilians surviving in Hamas captivity were always slim. Hamas is solely responsible for their deaths and the families they have shattered. The deaths of Dancyg and Yagev confirm that Hamas must be dismantled, not merely weakened.” — David May, FDD Research Manager and Senior Research Analyst
“Hamas has a long history of employing the tactic of kidnapping Israelis to pressure the Jewish state into releasing Palestinian terrorists serving lengthy prison sentences. This tactic was executed on a massive scale on October 7, yielding significant success for the terrorist organization and its allies. Now, Israel faces a challenging dilemma: whether to continue its campaign to eliminate the Hamas threat in Gaza or negotiate a ceasefire that would secure the release of the hostages, but potentially perpetuate Hamas’s grip on power.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal
IDF Liberates Four Hostages Abducted by Hamas on October 7
On June 8, the IDF carried out a rescue operation of four hostages seized by Hamas terrorists on October 7. Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv were captured at the Nova dance music festival, where Hamas and other terrorists perpetrated a horrific attack that claimed the lives of over 360 people, amid atrocities that included mass rape and mutilation. The Iranian-backed terrorist group’s brutal onslaught in southern Israel left more than 1,200 people dead.
The IDF operation to rescue the hostages involved a joint effort by officers from the elite Yamam counter-terrorism unit of the Israeli police and agents of the Shin Bet, supported by hundreds of IDF troops. Chief Inspector Arnon Zamora, a Yamam officer, was critically wounded during the operation and succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to a hospital in Israel for emergency treatment.
