Harrowing Footage Released of Female IDF Soldiers in Hamas Captivity

Latest Developments

Israel released previously unseen footage from the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel showing Hamas terrorists abusing five Israeli female soldiers. Released on May 22, the video shows Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Agam Berger, Daniela Gilboa, and Naama Levy, who were kidnapped from the Nahal Oz Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base along the border with Gaza. Stills released from the video and published in Israeli media outlets showed the women seated on the floor of an unidentified location with their hands tied behind their backs and their faces and clothes strewn with blood. The Hostage and Missing Families Forum stated, “the decision to release the video was made by the families of the five observers who remain in Gaza captivity,” The Jerusalem Post reported. In an interview with Ynet, Liri Albag’s mother, Shira, said that she was “one of the only mothers who have seen the video.”

“Most of the mothers have not watched it,” Shira Albag continued.  “It is very difficult to watch. You see the girls there, after they have entered the shelter, and even after their friends have already been murdered. Large numbers of terrorists enter and they are treated with brutality and violence, and they are spoken to in a very unpleasant and violent manner. There is something unsaid that we are afraid of, but they even say it there among themselves: ‘These are the girls who can get pregnant.’” The IDF recovered the bodies of four hostages from northern Gaza in mid-May, leaving 128 hostages remaining in Hamas hands.

Expert Analysis

“New footage of the Hamas attack on October 7 shows female IDF soldiers being kidnapped by the brutal terrorists. The video illustrates once again the importance of returning the hostages to Israel and freeing them from the hands of Hamas. It also is further evidence of how Hamas must be completely defeated so that it can never again pose a threat to Israel and the region.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups often label themselves as ‘freedom fighters,’ which has granted them a great degree of sympathy and support from gullible audiences in the Western world. Nevertheless, the brutal acts of October 7 and footage recorded by Hamas fighters of their acts serve as a stark reminder that these organizations are terrorists rather than the champions of freedom they claim to be.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

IDF Strikes Hamas Terrorists Hiding in UNRWA School

The IDF carried out an airstrike in Gaza, targeting Hamas terrorists who had gathered at an UNRWA school in the central Gaza town of Nuseirat, Israel’s military said on May 22. The airstrike was “carefully planned and carried out using precise munitions,” the IDF said. The Hamas members in the school included a member of the elite Nukhba force as well as an operative in an anti-tank unit. The IDF said that after the airstrike, there were “secondary explosions,” indicating that terrorists were storing weapons at the site. In addition, “a significant anti-tank missile operative who carried out attacks on IDF troops during the war” was eliminated by the IDF in a strike in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
