Israel Recovers Murdered Hostage’s Body

Latest Developments

Israeli commandos on April 6 recovered the body of an Israeli hostage murdered by his Palestinian terrorist captors in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they recovered the body of Elad Katzir from the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis in an overnight raid based on intelligence tip-offs. Terrorists seized 47-year-old Katzir and his 78-year-old mother, Hanna Katzir, at their homes in Kibbutz Nir Oz during the rampage on October 7. Terrorists also killed his father, Avraham Katzir.

Although the November truce between Israel and its terrorist adversaries freed Hanna Katzir, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) continued to hold her son captive. On January 8, PIJ released a video of Elad Katzir saying he was at risk of death and missing his family. A short time later, the IDF said, the terrorists murdered him and buried him in southern Khan Younis.

Carmit Katzir, the victim’s sister, said on Facebook that knowing Elad’s fate and having him back in Israel for burial “is a solace, in the terrible situation that has been created for us.” The recovery means that 129 hostages remain in captivity, since October 7. Israel has declared at least 35 of them dead in Gaza.

Expert Analysis

“Israeli troops have repeatedly taken great risks to recover hostages — dead or alive. This is a testament to the commitment of the Israeli military to the Israeli public that it will do whatever it can to bring back their people, and it is a testament to the national solidarity around what Israelis see as a necessary war for their survival.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO

“Intelligence gathering has been an integral and indispensable component in this war. Information obtained from diverse sources has contributed to the successful recovery of hostages, neutralization of high-ranking members of Hamas, and dismantling of terrorist networks operating in Gaza. With sufficient resources and dedication, the continuous collection of intelligence has the potential to be the decisive factor in defeating Hamas and its partners in the Gaza Strip.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal
