Terror Attack in Southern Israel Kills Two and Wounds Four

A terrorist attack in southern Israel on February 16 killed two people and wounded four others. The assailant used a firearm in the attack, which took place at the Masmiya junction in the Israeli city of Gedera. A civilian on the scene killed the perpetrator. The victims were evacuated to local hospitals. The attack occurred as Israel continues its fight in Gaza against Hamas more than four months after the terrorist group’s massacre on October 7.

Terrorist Threats in West Bank

Terrorist groups have sought to recruit more members and conduct attacks on Israel in the wake of October 7. It was not yet clear which group, if any, was directly responsible for the attack on February 16. However, Hamas has radicalized many terrorists in recent months. For example, in November 2023, Hamas members carried out a shooting attack in Jerusalem, killing four Israelis and wounding five. A Hamas member claimed in a CBS interview released on February 15 that the October 7 attack and the subsequent war in Gaza have helped Hamas recruit new members.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a raid in the northern West Bank city of Jenin on January 26 that eliminated a terrorist cell planning major attacks. Also in January, Israeli authorities arrested two groups of terrorists in eastern Jerusalem who were allegedly planning attacks. “According to the charge sheet presented at the Jerusalem District Court, the suspects regularly consumed ISIS materials online, such as videos on religious sermons and executions, including beheadings,” The Times of Israel reported.
