Hezbollah Rocket Fire Wounds Two in Northern Israel

Latest Developments

A Hezbollah rocket attack on the northern Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona wounded two civilians on February 13. The 47-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy — a mother and her son — were in “serious condition” and evacuated to a hospital in northern Israel, The Times of Israel reported. The strike follows thousands of other attacks by Hezbollah since October 8, the day after Hamas’s massacre in southern Israel.

Expert Analysis

“Hezbollah continues to carry out dangerous attacks on civilian communities in northern Israel. The Iranian-backed terrorist group has been firing thousands of rockets and missiles at Israel for four months. Hezbollah must be deterred from further attacks and removed from the border in order for peace to return.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

“By initiating a conflict on Israel’s northern border, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah claims the group is supporting Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations in Gaza. This strategy has proven to be ineffective. Israel has managed to weaken Hamas and its allies in Gaza while also diminishing some of Hezbollah’s capabilities in Lebanon, including killing nearly two hundred of its fighters.” Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

France Proposes Israel-Lebanon Truce

“France delivered a written proposal to Beirut aimed at ending hostilities with Israel and settling the disputed Lebanon-Israel frontier,” Reuters reported on February 13. The proposal would have Hezbollah remove some of its terrorists up to six miles from the Israel-Lebanon border. France’s proposal also envisions talks about delineating the border between Israel and Lebanon, which has historically been a source of tension. Hezbollah claims that it will not stop its attacks until the conflict in Gaza ends, effectively rejecting the proposal, Yediot Aharonot reported on February 13. Lebanon on February 6 also rejected a similar proposal by the United States and four European countries to curb Hezbollah’s attacks.
