Stuart Eizenstat has had an extraordinary career. Among the influential positions he’s held: President Jimmy Carter’s chief White House Domestic Policy Advisor. He’s now written “President Carter: The White House Years,” focusing on just four years (1977 to 1981)—but eventful years those were. He joins Professor Kenneth Stein, of Emory University; FDD’s senior vice president Jonathan Schanzer; and FDD president and Foreign Podicy host Clifford D. May to discuss the Carter years—from the Iran hostage crisis to the Camp David accords.

Those elected to high office are stars, but the success of their shows often depends on supporting actors: Their advisers. In 1969, Stuart E. Eizenstat signed on with Jimmy Carter, who was destined to become governor of Georgia and president of the United States. Named chief White House domestic policy adviser, Mr. Eizenstat had the president’s ear on just about any issue. Foreign policy in particular, topped that list.

President Carter: The White House Years

Stuart Eizenstat was at Jimmy Carter’s side from his political rise in Georgia through four years in the White House, where he served as Chief Domestic Policy Adviser. He was directly involved in many foreign policy ones. Famous for the legal pads he took to every meeting, he draws on more than 5,000 pages of notes and 350 interviews to write a comprehensive history and give an intimate view of the presidency.
