Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, a counterterrorism analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, pointed out that Assad's desperation to do whatever it takes to hold onto power has driven thousands of people from areas the regime is fighting to control.
“It’s very clear … that it’s not just ISIS that’s the problem here,” Gartenstein-Ross told Business Insider last week. “The problems include Assad’s regime and other factions.”
