Pursuing new U.S. sanctions would bring Obama into cooperation with the Republicans in Congress on Iran for the first time in his presidency. Instead of attacking Senate Republicans for undermining his Iran policy, Obama would be asking for their help.

“This is why the White House and Congress should have a long-overdue adult conversation with the GOP, as well as the many concerned Democrats, about what those sanctions should look like,” said Mark Dubowitz, executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
