Iran, World Powers Extend Nuclear Talks as Major Gaps Remain
The failure to win a deal is likely to embolden hard-line politicians in the U.S. Congress and in Iran who are skeptical about the concessions needed to agree an accord. Extending talks for a second time since July may present practical and political problems, though both sides have said it’s preferable to a breakdown, which might then lead to military conflict over Iran’s nuclear activities.
“With now yet another extension, Congress sees its repeated warnings that Iran will use diplomacy to run out the clock coming true,” said Mark Dubowitz, director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington policy-research group that helped U.S. legislators draft sanctions.
