Israel Confirms Elimination of Hamas’s Masked Propagandist Abu Obeida
Latest Developments
- Hamas Propaganda Leader Killed: Israel confirmed on August 31 that its forces killed Hamas’s shadowy military spokesman and propagandist, known by his nom de guerre, Abu Obeida, during a targeted strike in Gaza City the previous day. In announcing the successful joint operation, the IDF and Shin Bet described Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout — Obeida’s real identity — as the leader of Hamas’s propaganda apparatus and “one of the last senior figures in Hamas’s military wing” from before the terrorist group’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Considered the face of Hamas and always masked by a red keffiyeh, Obeida had served as spokesman for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades since 2004. He rose to prominence in 2006 when he announced the capture of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.
- Obeida Led Hamas’s Psychological Warfare Campaign: Obeida’s responsibilities as spokesman for Hamas’s armed formations included coordination with Hamas’s political spokespeople and as a “senior figure in setting propaganda policy.” The apparatus under his command was “responsible for distributing the atrocities of the October 7 massacre using footage captured by Hamas terrorists,” disseminating videos to influence Gazans and Hamas supporters throughout the world to promote terrorist attacks, and releasing videos of kidnapped Israeli hostages to psychologically terrorize Israelis. Obeida issued his last statement on August 29, when he threatened that Hamas’s hostages in Gaza would face the “same risks” as its fighters if the IDF proceeded with military operations in Gaza City.
- IDF to Target Hamas Leaders Outside of Gaza: IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir warned “Our actions are not yet complete, most of the remaining Hamas leadership is abroad, and we will reach them as well.” Hamas has yet to officially acknowledge Obeida’s death, but on August 30 it acknowledged the death of former leader Mohammad Sinwar, months after Israel confirmed his elimination.
FDD Expert Response
“Hamas’s main victories of late have been in the information battlespace, particularly if one looks at Israel’s losses in global public opinion. Abu Obeida has been the central figure in shaping the Islamist group’s messaging and propaganda, and as one of the last remaining senior leaders still operating in Gaza, he embodied Hamas’s claim of continuity and resilience. His elimination, therefore, carries both symbolic and operational weight.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst and Editor at FDD’s Long War Journal
“Abu Obeida became a fixture on regional television channels, with Al-Jazeera amplifying his propaganda. He projected an illusory image of victory, attempting to convince many viewers that Hamas was winning its war with Israel. In his appearances, he threatened to kill Israeli hostages and incited audiences across the Middle East. Regrettably, his persona was often emulated; supporters even donned his attire and mimicked his gestures. His elimination shatters that image and is a major blow to Hamas’s propaganda machine.” — Ahmad Sharawi, Research Analyst
