U.S., UK, and Allied Forces Strike Houthi Targets: On January 11, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that U.S. and UK forces launched and Australian, Canadian, Dutch, and Bahraini forces supported joint strikes against Houthi targets. British Prime Minister described the attacks as “self-defense” to “de-escalate tension and to restore stability to the region.” Allied forces hit more than 60 targets with approximately 100 precision-guided munitions across 15 Houthi military sites. The strikes intended to hold the Houthis “accountable” for their “illegal, indiscriminate, and reckless attacks on international shipping that have impacted 55 nations so far,” said CENTCOM Commander General Michael “Erik” Kurilla. President Joseph Biden added that “further measures” may be necessary to protect commercial shipping across the Red Sea.

Israel Fights Allegations of Genocide at the United Nations: On January 12, Israel argued against wartime genocide accusations raised by South Africa before the United Nations’ (UN’s) International Court of Justice. South Africa formally accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people following Hamas’s massacre on October 7, 2023. Israel’s legal team stated before the UN’s top court on January 12 that “Israel is in a war of defense against Hamas, not against the Palestinian people” and affirmed Israel’s mission to “eradicate the existential threat posed by Hamas militants” and to free the hostages held by Hamas. Israel condemned Pretoria’s attempt to weaponize the term genocide, which it asserted better apply to Hamas’s “annihilationist language” calling to eradicate Israel’s Jewish population.

Israel, Lebanon Prefer ‘Diplomacy’ at Border, Says U.S. Diplomat: After visiting Israel and Lebanon, on January 11, U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein reportedly stated that Israel and Lebanon “prefer” diplomacy to increasing tensions at their border. The same day, Israel detected 10 rockets shot from Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported. Between January 10 and January 11, the IDF attacked multiple Hezbollah military buildings, positions, and infrastructure in southern Lebanon with air force fighter jets and artillery, and the IDF identified additional launches near Israel’s Arab al-Aramshe.

U.S. Secretary of State Meets With Palestinian Authority President: On January 10, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with PA President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank to discuss minimizing civilian casualties in Gaza, facilitating humanitarian aid, and resolving administrative issues. Some reports described the meeting as “tense” and fraught with disagreements. Secretary Blinken’s meeting with President Abbas followed discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet concerning its war against Hamas, rising regional tensions, and the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
